Recap from July 25, 2017 meeting

At the July 25, 2017 Rotary Meeting, we were honored to have Mr. Denny Gagnon from Honor Flight Chicago join us and tell us about this organization and his role as a volunteer.   Currently Honor Flight Chicago is sending WW II and Korean War Vets to Washington D.C. for the day.  This program started about 12 years ago and is a 501(C)3 organization - Ifwhich means they receive NO Federal funding.  It costs approximately $200,000 per flight (even though Southwest Airlines supplies the airplane), costs are still incurred for the pilots, flight assistants, fuel, equipment rental, buses, etc.  They run about 7 flights per year - taking 100-110 per flight along with 130 volunteers per fight.  Actual volunteers are about 400 for all the prep work and actual day of activities.

We presented and donated a check in the amount of $250.00 to Honor Flight - Chicago.

Happy News was shared and we welcomed back David Cain who was feeling good after his surgery.

Al conducted trivia about "Famous Lasts."

Mark your calendar for August 22nd.  Jim Saul invited everyone to his home for a "Going Away" get together for Karen, who is moving to Colorado.  Please RSVP to Jim if you wish to attend, so he knows for food and beverages.

Installation Dinner Recap
The Installation Dinner for the 2017-2018 Rotary Club was held on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Emmett's Brewing Company in Wheaton.  It was a lovely evening.  The Social Hour was full of fun and meeting spouses and guests of our Villa Park Rotary members.   Guests included Lori Palmisano, wife of our new elected Villa Park Rotary President, Tony Palmisano; Jean Hockensmith from School District #45, Bill McGurr, District Assistant Governor and his wife, Lynn.  Other distinguished guests included Tom Fiola (husband of Jan Fiola); Karl Hartman (husband of Karen Hartman), Eva Sanchez (guest of Scott Helton); Mathew Janis (son of Walter Janis); Suzanne Reed (wife of Al Reed), Andrea Shewe (wife of Bill Schewe), and Ethel May (guest of Jay Tovian).

After Social Hour, we all entered the adjoining room and were treated to a delicious dinner, accompanied by an excellent summer desert of Raspberry Tiramisu - a twist on the traditional tiramisu (an Italian favorite of Tony's).   After dinner, Tony started with the Introductions for the evening, gave a Summary of the Past Year, and then presented the Perfect Attendance Awards to Earl Johnson - with 39 years of perfect attendance AND Buzz Janis with 37 years of perfect attendance.   Congratulations to Earl and Buzz - what an accomplishment you two gentlemen have achieved!!!   Kandace Krettler was introduced as President-Elect, and Joan Cavazos was introduced as the new Secretary for the year..  Tony concluded with thoughts about Looking Ahead to the coming year and plans that he has.

Thank you all for welcoming me to the Villa Park Rotary Club.  I am looking forward to being and working with you this coming year.

Thank you, Kandance for teaching me about Club Runner.  I hope I can continue sharing our Club's news as well as Kandance did.
